Wisler didn't have it last night. I was watching until the rain delay in the later innings, but the Braves were already too far behind at that point for me to consider them real threats even when it stopped pouring. Wisler tired his best to keep the ball down in the zone, but he was missing spots, and the ball kept going middle-middle (middle of the plate, middle of zone). When that happens, almost any major league player can crush a middle-middle fastball into the seats. It's a sitting duck in the pitching world.
That's what Ryan Braun did in the 5th. He pasted an easy fastball into the seats, and the Brewers were up 3-2. This came on the heels of the Brewers pitcher getting a 2-RBI knock with 2 outs and the bases loaded. At that point, the guys in the booth were having a discussion on being snake-bit. Like when you play it the right way, and it still comes back to bite you in the butt. Every Braves decision feels that way right now.
What makes it worse is the fact the Braves best hitters are absolutely awful right now. Freddie Freeman actually came out in the press and said, "Right now I suck, there's no getting around it." That's a brutally honest assessment from a Braves player that is used to producing offensively. And now he's suddenly unable to do anything that made him the biggest contract player on the team. Couple that with the other huge contract player Nick Markakis being unable to hit, and you have along with Aybar, 3 non-functional hitters in the Braves lineup on a daily basis.
Tyler Flowers was the only bright spot of the game, hitting a 2-run homer in the 1st inning to knock in Freddie Freeman. Other than that? The Braves didn't score again. The lineup went 0-7 with RISP, and couldn't manage to get a run in later in the game with the bases loaded. Inciarte and Frenchy both had 2 hit nights, but it didn't matter since nobody could get them in. Freddie was 0-3 with RISP. He and Nick went 1-24 on the series.
Braves lost 6-2, and got swept again at home. They have 2 wins in Turner Field and 20 losses. I'd suggest finding better things to do with your Memorial Day weekend than watch this team at home. Like be with family. Or knitting. Or washing your hair.
